When pregnant, a special hormone called Relaxin is produced by the mother’s ovaries and placenta. The purpose of this hormone is to relax the ligaments of the pregnant mother especially the pelvic ligaments. This allows for the baby to travel easier through the birth canal during birth. Now the benefit for this hormone is clear; however, on the flip side this hormone will induce postural misalignments since now it’s easier for the pregnant mother to shift out of place because of ligament laxity. Think about the postural changes a pregnant mother goes through and it’s easy to understand why many suffer from back pain, sciatica and other health related issues if left unchecked (See image below).
This is why in our office every ‘mother to be’ is regularly checked to ensure not only comfort during pregnancy for both mother and baby, but to ensure maximal health during it. A pelvis in proper alignment will not only help with the birthing process, but will also remove any unnecessary stress on the infant as it is pushed out during birth. A pelvis in proper alignment will also help prevent breeched positions. Chiropractors specialized in helping pregnant mothers know of a technique called Webster’s Technique. This technique has been shown to help breeched babies move into the ideal birthing position over 80% of the time (1), therefore, avoiding C-sections and other added stress that comes along with it. The benefits are tremendous, just ask any mother who has chosen chiropractic as a part of her lifestyle for not only herself but for her whole family.
