| The school year is back and with it comes additional stress on a student’s body. Last week we talked about the adverse effects of sitting. This week we will go deeper into why sitting is so harmful to the body especially the spine. Have you ever thought of the harm that sitting can cause to your body? The sitting position crushes your lungs and heart. Therefore its capacity to function properly is affected by decreasing the amount the oxygen the body can receive and deliver. This decrease in oxygen levels affects your entire body, but more importantly it affects your brain’s ability to function properly leading mental health problems such as decreased mental clarity, focus and memory. How does sitting affect your spine? Your spine needs to have three flowing curves – one in the neck, one in the mid-back and one in the lower spine. However, when we sit, we end up losing the three curves and replace it with one big curve. This puts uneven pressure along your entire spine which accelerates the breakdown of it. Your discs degenerate, your ligaments and muscles are strained leading to muscle tension, soreness and weakness. What is the end result? This damage your spine adversely affects your spinal cord and that leads to health problems not limited to migraines, headaches, neck, mid-back & low back pain, sciatica and other organ related problems. Check out this video that summarises the hazards of sitting. Enjoy and stay Healthy! -- Dr. Tyler A. Kong |
